Edward S. Blurock

Edward S. Blurock

A common denominator in my work is modeling and using state of the art software technical methods to accomplish the task at hand. One view of my research is to mimic human reasoning with software technical means. In combustion modeling, this manifests itself in a software expert and database system that mimics the way a combustion engineer would model large reaction mechanisms. In data analysis, I focus on fuzzy logic based methods to try to quantify, through classification and decision processes, human intuitive concepts. As part of more recent work, ontologies are playing a large role in the capturing of meta-data about object, whether they be molecular objects, instruments descriptions or observations and data from scientific instruments. Ontologies are also being used as the base for model-based programming base for all the current software.

One primary advantage of my multidisciplinary background is that I can communicate in the language of chemists, mathematicians, computer scientists, chemists and engineers. I serve as a bridge between the disciplines. The primary disadvantage is that, seen from the viewpoint of each of the disciplines, that he am an expert in the ‘other’ field. For example, at RISC in Austria, a computer science/mathematical institute, I was mostly tagged as a chemist. Within the combustion kinetics world I am deemed more a computer scientist.

With the advent of the explosion of data produced within a project and with the increasing pressure to have an efficient means to communicate and disseminate this data, the role of a well-defined data management plan within a proposal is expanding and the requirement becoming mandatory.

One can say that the work of Blurock Consulting AB has three pillars, data management, software and web services that implement state of the art data management principles and, lastly, extensive expertise in the applied area of combustion and physical organic chemistry.

Within data management, whether it be the development of data management plans for funding agencies or the developed application software (such as ChemConnect and JThermodynamicsCloud), the emphasis is promoting FAIR data principles and the traceability, accountability and validation of data.

A common denominator within the recent data management software produced by Blurock Consulting AB is the use of ontologies for the organization of the software and the data itself.

Expertise

Edward S. Blurock has over 35 years of experience, both in chemical data and modelling, for example, REACTION (4), JTHERGAS (5), JThermodynamicsCloud (1) and ChemConnect (2,3), and in applied artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques and software (at the Research Institute for Symbolic Computation, Austria and Combustion Physics, Lund University, Sweden ). He is recognized to be at the forefront of data management within the community by being the ‘Standard definition for data collection and mining toward a virtual chemistry of Smart Energy Carriers‘ Working Group leader in COST Action network CM1404, ‘Chemistry of Smart Energy Carriers and Technologies’(5),  and leader of the CM1401 task to catalog data use within the community. He is co-editor and co-author of several chapters in the book Cleaner Combustion: Developing Detailed Chemical Kinetic Models. Currently, in the pursuance of FAIR data practices and emphasizing accountability, traceability and validation of data, ontologies, see (1) and (2), play a large role in the development of software and the structuring of data.
